Case Study

A Devon woman has been awarded compensation after a ‘routine’ operation to end years of misery went wrong.

The woman, in her early 40’s, had suffered from painful and heavy periods.

But during the surgery to remove a fibroid her cervix was perforated and her bowel damaged.

A section of her bowel had to be removed and post operatively she suffered significant abdominal pain and bleeding, which ultimately required a hysterectomy. She also began to suffer Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Psychologically, she was left distressed by her extensive scarring and the daily pain and bleeding encroached on all areas of her life.

Elizabeth Larner, specialist clinical negligence lawyer at Wollens, acted for the woman and has secured compensation for her.

Elizabeth Larner said: “This surgery was supposed to improve this woman’s quality of life, to relieve her of the intrusive menstrual problems from which she had suffered for many years. Instead, the result was further surgeries and ongoing pain and distress. We were glad to secure this result for her.”

The woman said: “Wollens helped me to prove that negligence had happened to me when I went for a routine operation. The hospital denied at first that it had happened. But Wollens got to the truth”.
