Medical negligence can occur at various levels of the healthcare system, from pharmacists to consultant surgeons. General Practitioners are usually the first point of contact in our healthcare system, and they play a crucial role in diagnosing and managing various medical conditions. When mistakes are made, unfortunately, the impact is often detrimental to both the patient’s physical and mental health.

Common causes of GP negligence:

  • Failure to refer to specialists;
  • Inadequate patient examination ;
  • Medication errors;
  • Lack of proper follow up care;
  • Poor records keeping; and
  • Administration errors.

If you have suffered an injury or worse outcome because of an error made by your GP, you may be able to claim compensation.

Making a complaint

It is often helpful to make a written complaint to your GP practice outlining your concerns.

Making a complaint to your GP will not only help you as the patient to understand exactly what has happened and to assist with any legal claim, but also to prevent future errors for yourself and others.

Outline desired outcome – clearly state what you hope to achieve with your complaint – an explanation; apology; corrective action, or policy changes. .  If you believe the standard of care that you received surrounding your cosmetic treatment fell below that of a reasonable standard, you may be eligible to make a clinical negligence claim.

Be clear and specific – include dates, times, and names of those involved;

Be objective – focus on the facts and how you have been affected by what has happened;
