Given that sport and physical activity contributes £39 billion to the UK’s economy as of September 2022, it is unsurprising that the UK is a top destination for sports professionals and athletes.  

 If you are an elite sportsperson or qualified coach aged over 16 and you are sponsored by your sports governing body, then you may be able to come to the UK on an International Sportsperson Visa. 

There are three main immigration routes available to sportspersons:

  1. Sports Visit
  2. Permitted Paid Engagement
  3. International Sportsperson

Sports Visit Visa

This is for amateur and professional sportspersons, which includes both individuals and teams, technical or support staff of sportspersons and officials aiming to visit the UK for a period of up to 6 months whilst undertaking permitted unpaid sporting activities.

Permitted Paid Engagement Visa

This Visa is available to certain professionals and experts who wish to visit the UK for up to 1 month so that they can undertake a paid engagement relating to their expertise and occupation.

International Sportsperson Visa

This Visa is for elite sportspersons as well as qualified sport coaches who are at the highest level of their respective sport internationally. This Visa requires the applicant to be sponsored on either a short or long-term contract and endorsed by the appropriate UK sports governing body.
