North Devon Maternity Unit Reopening Further Delayed.

In July, the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust announced the temporary suspension of birthing services at North Devon District Hospital due to staffing concerns. While the Trust had hoped to reopen the service on 29 September, it has now confirmed that this date has been delayed, with no revised reopening date yet announced.

Birthing services at the Barnstaple hospital have been suspended since 11 August 2026, meaning pregnant women across North Devon and parts of North-East Cornwall currently need to travel to alternative hospitals, including Exeter, to give birth

The Trust has reiterated its commitment to restoring birthing services in North Devon as soon as it is safe to do so. However, it has stated that, at present, it remains safer for the suspension to continue while recruitment and staffing challenges are addressed.

This latest delay will undoubtedly be disappointing for many expectant families across the region. However, patient safety must remain the overriding priority. Access to safe, appropriately staffed maternity care is essential in helping to achieve the best possible outcomes for mothers and babies and reducing the risk of avoidable harm during pregnancy, labour and birth.
