An employment settlement agreement is a legally binding contract between an employer and an employee that settles a dispute or brings employment to an end on agreed terms. Typical terms cover payments (such as compensation and any holiday pay), confidentiality and non‑disparagement, post‑termination restrictions, agreed references, and the return of company property.

In the UK, a settlement agreement is only valid if the employee receives independent legal advice, and it’s usual for the employer to contribute to those legal costs.

How Wollens supports you

  • Clear, practical advice. We explain what the draft actually means for you, flag risks, and identify potential amendments.
  • Focused negotiation. We engage with the employer to secure fair outcomes on compensation, references and restrictions.
  • Efficient turnaround. Our standard process—review, advise, finalise and sign the adviser’s certificate—is typically completed within about 7 days of instruction (often faster where timings are tight).
  • Cost clarity. We coordinate employer contributions to your legal fees and tell you upfront if any shortfall may arise.

If you’ve been offered a settlement agreement—or want to propose one—get in touch with Jon Dunkley or Lucy Phillips in our employment team at Wollens for prompt, confidential advice.
