Deborah Baker
I am a Partner in the Family Team, handling a diverse range of family law cases for both married and unmarried clients. With nearly 40 years of experience, I have witnessed significant changes in family law, particularly in children cases and the evolving recognition of fathers’ rights to share parenting responsibilities.
My expertise lies in financial claims arising from divorce or the breakdown of cohabitation relationships. I specialise in complex cases involving farming divorces and family companies, addressing challenges such as distinguishing matrimonial from non-matrimonial assets—key in determining how the court treats and divides these assets. I also handle pre- and post-nuptial agreements and children-related matters.
I have seen a huge change in children law with fathers now having a much better opportunity to have a full relationship with their children.
I provide a practical and commercially focused approach, drawing on strong professional links with accountants and experts. These relationships help me deliver comprehensive advice to farmers, business owners, and shareholders, tailoring solutions to their unique circumstances.
While my aim is to resolve disputes amicably and reduce acrimony, I am committed to securing the best possible outcome for my clients. I encourage resolution outside the court process whenever feasible but am prepared to litigate when necessary.
My background in wills and probate complements my family law practice, especially when advising cohabiting couples. I offer guidance on setting up home together, protecting assets, and addressing challenges when relationships end. I understand the importance of proper planning, including wills, to prevent unnecessary complications and trauma for families.
Outside work, I enjoy watching rugby and MotoGP and walking my dog along the beach.
